While Martinez slumbered in early-evening darkness, Creek Monkey was absolutely packed. So the arrival of the Creek Monkey Tap House last summer was cause for considerable celebration. The Contra Costa County seat boasts river views, historic old houses and an adorable downtown filled with restaurants -- that turns into a veritable ghost town after dark. Add in locally grown, farm-fresh fare and a terrific array of craft beers on tap, and owners Jim and Katie Blair are clearly on to something. The proof, if any was needed, came on a recent chilly Tuesday evening in the doldrums between Christmas and New Year's. In a city that practically rolls up its sidewalks when the courthouse closes, a casual gastropub with extended hours is pretty darn heavenly. A gastropub that stayed open until 9 p. m. on weeknights.
