Watches...what are the downsides of PVD coating on a watch? Is it better than stainless steel?
I'm looking at a baume and mercier watch and it has both a stainless steel and a PVD steel option. The PVD is more expensive. Is it worth the extra money to get the PVD? It is a lighter material, but I also was told that it is far more prone to damage/breaking.
It does sound like the PVD coating would be better than stainless - tough, hard to scratch. What usually goes first on my watches is the crystal, not the case. The crystal gets scratched up before the case starts looking bad.

As business and political leaders descend on Addis Ababa for the World Economic Forum on 9-11 May, Premier Meles Zenawi's government will be trumpeting its economic achievements. Yet the economic claims of the government, the World Bank and other international agencies (which depend on state cooperation) deserve closer analysis. A recent World Bank report suggested that Ethiopia navigated the global economic crisis in 2008-9 better than many others. All this follows government claims of average 11% annual economic growth for the last eight years. In cold statistics, Meles's government - in power for 21 years - has presided over a formidable economic turnaround. When pressed, IMF and World Bank officials concede the government's calculations are 'optimistic' but 'not by more than 1 or 2%'. The International Monetary Fund recently suggested that Ethiopia could join the middle-income countries if its rapid growth continued. The National Weather Service issued thunderstorm warnings and watches as storms hit the Chicago area this evening. In Niles, a weather service spotter reported half-dollar-sized hail and heavy rain resulting in 3 inches of standing rain in one parking lot in the northwest suburb this evening. As a thunderstorm warning was issued for portions of Cook County tonight and a thunderstorm watch for most of northeast Illinois was extended to midnight. The storm pelted northwest and north suburbs and the Far North Side of Chicago with heavy rain and hail, bringing traffic on the Kennedy Expressway to a standstill briefly, flooding many streets and sending tree branches onto homes. A storm dropped hail as large as 1-1/4 inches, hitting O'Hare and heading east through Park Ridge, Niles, Morton Grove and Glenview, as well as Northwest and North Side neighborhoods.
